Parts of the boat
Labeled drawings you can explore, test yourself on and print.
- Parts of a boat
Twenty-seven parts of an outboard runabout and nineteen of a sailboat, drawn from the side and from above and labeled one by one.
- Stern
The back end of the boat, the fittings found there on an outboard runabout, and five stern shapes drawn at one scale.
- Bow
The front of the boat, the fittings found there on a small powerboat, and five bow profiles drawn at one scale.
- Transom
The flat surface across the stern: how the regulations define it, how transom height is measured, and where an outboard motor mounts.
- Gunwale
The top edge of a boat’s side, cut in section so you can see it beside the sheer, the rub rail and the coaming.
- Keel
One word, two meanings: the centerline backbone of every hull, and the fin under a sailboat. Five sailboat keels drawn at one scale.
Hull types
Every common hull shape, drawn three ways at one scale.
- Boat hull
What the hull is, the names of its parts, and an atlas that draws each hull form and operating mode in profile, plan and section at one scale.
Measurements
What the numbers on a spec sheet measure, drawn on one boat.
- Draft
The depth of the hull below the waterline, drawn on one runabout at three waterlines so you can watch it change with load.
- Beam
The width of the boat at its widest point, measured two ways, drawn beside the two length figures on the same spec sheet.
- Freeboard
The height of the side above the water, drawn on one runabout at three loads: depth minus draft, measured two ways.
- Deadrise
The angle of the hull bottom from the horizontal. Set it on a dial, then compare four V hulls at the same two stations.
Words and directions
Boat terms, port and starboard, and printable sheets.
- Boat terms
Boat and nautical terms in one sentence each, from the parts of the hull to the words used aboard and underway, with a drawing of the part wherever you can point to one.
- Port & starboard
Port is left and starboard is right when you face the bow, whichever way you happen to be standing. Drawn from above, with the sidelight colors and where the words came from.
- Printable worksheets
Labeled and blank sheets of each drawing, and a blank lines-plan sheet, ready to print.
